On the River - Douwe #5 - Fine Art Giclee Print 16" x 16"
This is one of my favorite paintings, the imagery and layers of colors are stunning. This will be an inspiring addition to any home, tack room, or lounge. Douwe and I worked on this painting in two different sessions. I added texture to the canvas and a soft background color to start with. Douwe painted with green and magenta to create the colorful underlayer. In our final session he did a lot of blue and white layers and I also used a palette knife to spread the paint.
I named this piece ‘On the River’ because I could see two canoes, one larger boat with a man fishing in the forefront and a smaller one at the top of the canvas. The scene reminds me of my home state of Maine. I was born and lived there until just recently when I relocated to Florida. I fell in love with horses and trained at the Isaac Royal Academy of Equestrian Arts in Dover-Foxcroft for over 15 years.
I was always surrounded by nature and many of my close friends enjoyed being out on the water on boats, canoes, and kayaks. I also found Douwe on an island in Maine, a very unlikely place to find a big Friesian horse! He had to travel on a ferry boat when I brought him home. Click here to read more about Douwe’s story.

Douwe’s story and artistic journey
Douwe was my once-in-a-lifetime horse, my heart horse, my soulmate. He taught me so much about life and the power of patience, love, and building trust. He was considered dangerous, unwanted, and misunderstood when I met him. It took many years to break through his many layers of emotional and physical blockages to discover how highly intelligent, personable, and loving he really was. Losing him has been the greatest loss of my life but I am forever grateful for the 12 years we had together.
After Douwe passed away in 2020 I decided to keep all of his remaining originals. Many of his original works are now available as fine art prints. I know that Douwe’s legacy will continue to inspire equestrians for years to come. It is my hope that his art prints will inspire more equestrians to think creatively with their horses and from a space of love and patience.
