This vibrant piece was created at Equitana in 2021 held at the Kentucky Horse Park. Rovandio and I were invited to perform our Art on Horseback demo at the very first Equitana event held in the United States. Thousands of spectators attended and I enjoyed watching the other presenters and meeting with fans.

Our demo was held outside which presented a minor problem…there was a huge storm coming! It was scheduled to arrive during my demo so I was a bit worried. Thankfully, the demo before us was a horse rescue group and they didn’t mind moving to a different slot so I could paint before the storm. Just as we finished and packed the easel into the truck the skies erupted! That is why I decided to name this piece Equitana Rain. I will always remember those dark clouds overhead.

I prepared this canvas with a heavy layer of texture and a rich blue background. The first session was during our demo at Equitana where I painted the outline of the horse, and added some accent color. Rovandio signed the canvas as well, check out his amazing Swoosh brustroke in the lower right hand side of the canvas.

After we had been home in Florida for awhile we had a second and third riding session to add the finishing touches to the canvas.

Each painting/riding session includes walk, trot, canter, flying changes, sidepass, rein-back, and piaffe. Rovandio is currently 21 years old so I keep his sessions short and sweet so I do not stress his body. I want him to enjoy painting and have him stay sound as long as possible. Each painting is an accumulation of two decades and the thousands of hours we have spent together.

I am also excited to share that Rovandio signed the piece himself! The teal brushstrokes near his hoofprint were painted using a brush in his mouth. Click here to see his personal online gallery.
